Hey there! How's it going?
I’ve been thinking a lot about what actually keeps an actor in the game over the long haul.
And here’s the pattern that keeps coming up: Even the most committed, talented actors drift into safety without noticing it.
Not because you’re slacking. Not because you don’t care. Just because the familiar choices are easier to access.
The beats you’ve nailed in the past tend to show up again. The comfortable version of you steps in before the deeper version gets a chance.
And last week we had two reminders of how valuable collaboration is when you want to keep pushing past your safe (boring) choices.
Gianni Aprile booked another commercial after working with Brandon Knox. What made this one special wasn’t a giant transformation. It was the little things. The real human behavior inside the quick beats. The subtle adjustments that make a performance honest instead of “performed.”
Gianni would’ve done well on his own because he is a pro, but the refinement made it undeniable. He invested in coaching and collaboration and booked it!
Wole Daramole shot a Canadian comedy series role with me and booked it. We layered in more intentional physical choices. Built a moment before that mattered. We added improv to sharpen the last button and created two distinct takes so casting had multiple options to wow them.
That variety made the difference that booked.
This is the kind of work that keeps actors growing. It isn't "fixing" or "forcing".
Just…deepening and growing. Widening your range.
Letting someone support you in finding the best version of you that actually belongs on screen.
And in 2025, coaching and collaboration matters even more because of where the industry is going.
AI is rising fast. Budgets are tighter. Casting directors have less time for "they're ok" and demand “they're outstanding!"
But the upside of all of this is exciting: Live performance is exploding again. People want presence. People want truth. Audiences want the spark only a real actor can bring.
Sure, AI can write scenes. It can generate images. It can mimic voices. But it cannot yet recreate the moment a human being drops into a performance and makes it feel alive, especially with other real live humans.
And that’s exactly why I’ve been doubling down on the work we do inside Monologue of the Month Club.
