This past Friday night I had the honor of emceeing Hope in the Street, a massive charity fundraiser for Hope House. Thousands of people filled the streets shoulder to shoulder. The air pulsed with music, food, laughter, and generosity.
The energy was electric. You could feel it in your chest when the first band hit their opening chord. You could hear it in the roar of the crowd as each act took the stage. You could see it in the faces of volunteers serving with joy.
My role was simple: be the steward of the evening. Protect the energy. Set up each band with strong introductions. Keep the audience connected. The night flowed seamlessly, and the result was record-breaking attendance and fundraising.
But the real story was bigger than the event itself.
1. The Power of Coming Together
When you scroll the news or your feed, the world looks completely fractured. Division sells clicks. Conflict gets attention.
But last night was proof that is not the whole truth. Thousands of people gathered not to argue but to unite around a mission: enjoy a night of music and make the community stronger.
Everyone showed up. The committee. The volunteers. The vendors. The sponsors. The bands. The audience. Each person played their part, and the outcome was tangible. Lives will be better because of it.
We are not as divided as we think. There is more good happening than we realize. There is hope for us.
2. The Power of Hope
So what is hope? Hope is the expectation of a positive outcome. The belief that good things are on the way.
The opposite is despair. Futility. Resignation. That heavy voice that says “things are bad and they are never going to get better.”
Without hope, rejection feels final. With hope, rejection feels like a stepping stone.
Without hope, the "swamp of sadness" swallows you whole. With hope, even the faintest spark gets you moving again.
Hope is not soft. Hope is strength. It is fuel. It is the thing that lets people endure suffering, find solutions, and keep going until the light returns.
3. Hope and Acting
Actors live on hope. Hope that the next audition lands. Hope that the next role transforms lives. Hope that their work will reach someone’s heart.
But here is the truth: hope alone is not a strategy. You cannot cross your fingers and just hope, waiting for the phone to ring or an email to arrive.
However, HOPE + ACTION is unstoppable.
• Hope gives you the belief that your next lead role is coming.
• Action is sharpening your craft, rehearsing, and mastering your monologues.
• Hope fuels your resilience when rejection hits.
• Action is building your reel, refreshing your headshots, and stepping back into the audition room with confidence.
Hope is the gasoline. Action is the fire.
4. My Challenge for You
So here is my challenge to you today:
• Keep hope alive in your career, your family, and your community.
• Be a beacon of hope for others when they have lost theirs.
• Pair your hope with bold action.
The easiest choice is to give up and play the victim. But actors who carry hope do not quit.
And if you ever feel stuck (like Artax sinking in The Never Ending Story), just surround yourself with people who carry hope. Borrow their light until yours returns.
Yes, our industry faces challenges. Yes, the world is heavy right now. But I believe in the power of people to rise, to choose good, and to overcome darkness.
And it all starts with one four-letter word: HOPE.
